Getting started on the electric guitar definitely isn't easy, and you will have a long way to go before you can be rocking the stage just like your heroes. The good news is that you will have a lot of fun along the way, and you just may be well on your way to unlocking a talent that you never knew you had.
The first step in unlocking electric guitar mastery is of course using the proper tools. You will need an electric guitar in reasonably good condition. You don't necessarily have to go to the store and buy a brand new model, although you could if you wanted to, and there are many reasonably priced electric guitars in good condition on the used market. In addition, several music stores offer entry-level electric guitar packages that may come when an amplifier, an instrument cord, and virtually everything you need to get started learning electric guitar.
The next step is getting the basics down first. It is your choice whether or not you will want to take beginner guitar lessons or learn on your own. Regardless of the course of action that you choose however, you will need to equip yourself with at least a basic knowledge of guitar chords and scales. This will give you a good foundation on which to build further studies on.
Try to keep your passion alive by using what you have learned in real-world applications. If you have learned all the basic guitar chords for example, try to see if you can play a few songs that you are already familiar with. Doing this will give you a more concrete picture of what you are learning, and encourage you to keep learning more. Start out with a few simple songs that you feel reasonably confident enough to tackle, and gradually work your way to harder songs. It would not be long before you have a few songs under your belt that you can play confidently on the spur of the moment.
You will need some raw material in order to serve as your inspiration to play electric guitar, and in your case this would be music. Listen to as much music as possible, and try to lend an ear to music outside your chosen styles. While there is certainly nothing wrong about wanting to rock out all the time, learning about different styles of music may teach you certain techniques and melodic ideas that you would never have been exposed to had you just listened to rock exclusively.
Practice. This is quite possibly the most important aspect of learning electric guitar for beginners, and anyone who has managed to achieve a certain level of proficiency at the instrument will no doubt have had to put in countless hours and hours of practice. In fact, practically all the guitar greats still put in several hours of wood shedding daily in order to maintain their level of proficiency. If such players still feel the need to practice and constantly get better at their craft, you owe it to yourself to do the same as well. The good news is practice this just as much fun as it is hard work, and you will definitely get a lot more out of it than improving your skills.
